A “Testimonial Machine” is an automated system you use to get testimonials automatically for your business.
Here are 3 reasons every business needs an Automated Testimonial Machine:
#1. Increased sales.
Testimonials simply boost sales. They help in your marketing. They help close more sales. They get people “on the fence” off the fence so they become customers.
#2. Increased customer retention.
For most businesses, churn and cancellations are a big problem. Testimonials help reduce churn and cancellations. If you are able to constantly remind existing and customers of why you’re awesome, they’re less likely to cancel.
I once implemented a retention plan that cut churn for a large company by about 30%. Testimonials were a big part of that effort.
#3. Increased employee and owner morale.
Every company has to deal with unhappy customers. Even Apple has unhappy customers. If unhappy customers start to control the narrative about your company, then your business will have a tough time.
Employees can start to feel like the company is “bad” and not helping customers. They’ll become negative, start to hate their job, and won’t work as hard to retain or serve customers.
They’ll start thinking: “Our company sucks. Why do I even try to do a better job for our customers? It’s no use.” The good employees will leave, and your company will go downhill. I’ve seen this happen with expensive consequences.
So, what can you do to stop it? Take control of the narrative. Start re-selling your employees one why your company is amazing but telling Customer Success Stories.
This will help your Customer Support Team, and all the other aspects of your business. And you’ll have happier employees who feel like what they do matters.
But, how do you get the necessary Testimonials & Customer Success Stories?
Here’s how to get testimonials for your business automatically
Part 1: Offer some sort of incentive for your customers to give you testimonials.
Let’s face it, people are driven by self-interest. And, if there is some benefit for them, then they’re more likely to give you a good testimonial.
Maybe you give them some extra product. Or, you give them a month of free membership.
Part 2: Start asking for testimonials.
The easiest way is by sending them an email. But, if that doesn’t work, you can ask them at the cash register or call them on the phone.
A quick note on the email. Lead with the benefit. I’ve found that not many people reply to an email that says “Can I get your feedback?” You get a lot more responses when your email subject is: “I want to give you _.” Then, you explain what the benefit is, why you are giving it to them, etc. I can help you put together an email for this.
Part 3: Use the testimonials.
A lot of businesses get testimonials and never even use them!
Put all of them in one central Google Drive Folder.
Automatically send them out to everyone who needs to see them. Either send an email or slack message to all the people who benefit from testimonials. Your marketers. Your salespeople. Your Customer Support Reps. The people who make your product or provide your service. Everyone can benefit from knowing that your company is doing good in the world. So, send them to everyone.
Part 4: Systemize this.
Put one person in charge of this project and have them make sure it all gets done.
Here’s an example of a weekly to-do list for them:
- Write and send a testimonial solicitation email to 25% of our customer database. (Email 25% of your customers each week, and you can email all of them once a month.)
- Collect the testimonials.
- Handle all email responses that come in and make sure any customer support requests are handled.
- Make sure the customers get whatever benefit we promised to them for a testimonial.
- Upload all the testimonials to a central Google Drive Folder.
- Send the testimonials to the Marketing, Sales, and Customer Support Managers.
Ok, that about sums it up. Let me know if I’m missing anything, or you have any questions.
